A tool box is a portable container designed to carry tools for a particular task. Carpenters, electricians and many other professions use them to store, transport and easily access the tools they need to perform their jobs. A toolbox can be large or small and made of a variety of materials.

A single box can hold only a few tools, while a large toolbox might contain more than 100 hand-held and power-driven tools needed for a home improvement or repair project. Some models also have separate spaces for various types of wrenches, hammers and other power tools. The term tool box can also refer to a larger tool storage system, often called a mechanics tool chest or roller cabinet, that holds and organizes a large number of tools and other repair equipment.

Smaller portable tool boxes, sometimes referred to as hand toolboxes, are often made of plastic and designed with one handle on top and a lid that opens on a hinge. Most have a removable tote tray that sits on a flange inside the lip of the box and provides extra storage space for smaller parts and accessories. Some have a divider between the tote tray and the main compartment that helps organize more delicate tools, like a non-contact voltage tester or a torpedo level.

Many of the same features found on larger tool boxes are also available in some smaller portable tool boxes, including lockable drawers, a padded shoulder strap and rugged handles with rubber grips. In addition, some have a padded interior that protects the contents from bumps and scrapes.

The largest tool boxes are often made of metal and feature a top chest with a lid that opens on a hinge, a lower cabinet on wheels or casters, and a set of drawers for storing tools. These are the types of toolboxes seen in dealership service departments and well-organized workshops. Some even have a separate middle chest for additional storage space, which is especially useful for large or heavy tools.

Some tool boxes are made with a clear plastic that allows users to see what is in the box without opening it, an advantage when working on vehicles or other locations where it may be difficult to get close to the contents. Some are also lockable, providing a measure of security and privacy when working in public places.

In manufacturing, tool boxes are used to store a wide range of tools and accessories, from standard items like screwdrivers and pliers to more specialized gear like an electronic voltmeter or digital calipers. In some cases, manufacturers keep multiple boxes on hand, allowing different shifts to have access to the tools they need as demand arises. Keeping these buffers of tooling in place helps ensure that perishable items don't run out and prevent a disruption in production.
